Dental sealants are a form of preventive treatment for cavities. They are placed in the grooves and fissures of your teeth to prevent decay. Mostly, sealants are used to protect erupting molars in children, but they are equally effective on adult teeth as well.
Why are sealants needed?
The biting surfaces of our back teeth are irregular and have grooves and fissures on them. These areas can house bacteria, food debris and plaque, and become a perfect breeding ground for tooth decay. A regular toothbrush or floss often cannot reach these areas as they are narrow and deep.
Sealants are painted on to the surface of these fissures and grooves to smooth them out and prevent any deposits in them.
The application of sealants is a simple procedure and can be carried out in a single visit to our office. First, we will clean your teeth and dry them. Then, a dental etching gel is applied to the chewing surfaces to further roughen them up. This is done so that the sealant can bond properly with the tooth. After a while, the etching gel is washed off, and the tooth is dried again. Then, the sealant material is painted on to the tooth carefully. A special dental curing light may be used to help the sealant harden. Once this is done, we will carefully check whether all the grooves and fissures in your teeth have been covered and if your bite is proper. You will then be ready to eat and drink foods of your choice with added protection to your teeth.
